Thurston Barn
Circa 1790
From Corinth, VT
I dismantled this barn in 2007 (I think). The frame sat in covered piles for nearly a decade before I finally reconstructed it on our Land in Strafford Vermont. It now serves as my shop and storage space. It's a unique early barn. Square in plan (36'3"x36'3"), and offset gable entry. It was a threshing barn. Also classified as 'gallows' frame for the mid- roof support system. And a 'batten' barn for the original method that siding boards were hung - with horizontal battens and single spikes at each girt level (so three per board). Tops of boards are captured by board grooves all around (in plates and gable tie beams). Not pictured are lower level braces which I still (shame) have not gotten to reinstating. Also missing are pictures of the barn prior to takedown and of a roof frame raising party - I had many of the usual suspects here to help that day. Thank you to those folks!
